A Rare Moment of Clarity

It all started in 8th grade when providence put me in Mr. Nelson's English class.

Mr. Nelson was the first teacher I ever had who was really passionate about what he taught -- and the first teacher who really pushed me beyond my comfort zone.

Maybe you once had a teacher like Mr. Nelson... a teacher that literally changed your life. You see, Mr. Nelson changed mine.

Like all young students, I wondered, "What will I do when I grow up?" I didn't know. To make matters worse, I was competent in nearly every subject, but didn't excel in anything in particular... which made my decision even harder.

But then along came Mr. Nelson's English class. I'm not really sure what happened, but one day as I walked down the long corridor of my middle school, I had a rare moment of clarity.

"When I Grow Up,
I'm Going to Be a Writer!"

In that moment, I knew I was going to be a writer. Don't ask me how I knew... I just did.

And from that point on it seems my compass was set, my destination determined.

I took all the "honors" English classes, capping it off with AP English in the 12th grade. I joined the newspaper my sophomore year, became sports editor my junior year, and feature editor my senior year.

I took a paid position on the college paper.

I wrote poetry and twice got it published in an annual journal put out by St. Olaf College (a college I never even attended).

Everything was looking good. It seemed I would be a writer.

An Unexpected Detour...

Life doesn't always work out as we expect, and this was certainly true in my case. Here's what my career path looked like:

  • Rocky Mountain Snowboards - selling snowboards

  • By the Foote - installing wire closet shelving

  • Merrill Lynch - managing 401(k) plans

  • Sonlight Curriculum - writing catalog copy

  • Freelance Copywriter - woohoo!

People always wonder how I went from installing wire closet shelving to working for Merrill Lynch. Actually, it's not as great a leap as it looks.

Basically, I wrote down exactly what I wanted in a job. Turns out, there was a temp job available that fit my criteria. They didn't tell me who my employer would be, at first.

Luckily I was hired... at Merrill Lynch.

For the first 3 months, I did grunt work reviewing paper forms that came into the 401(k) department. I must have done a good job because after three months they hired me into a permanent position processing 401(k) payrolls.

I had a book of clients... big companies like PG&E, FedEx, and Dolby Laboratories who offered 401(k) plans to their employees. Every time they ran payroll, they would send me a file of their employees and how much each one was investing into their 401(k).

I would then reconcile the records to the money they sent to me (usually hundreds of thousands of dollars). When everything balanced out, I would "post" the file, which would then trigger a chain of events where the money would actually buy up shares in mutual funds in the stock market.

Later on, I was promoted, yada, yada, yada.

The important thing here is that my managers...

Discovered I Could Write!

And they began sending me all their formal written correspondence so I could critique it before they sent it out.

Keep in mind, I was only 19 years old when I got hired at Merrill Lynch. And here I was, this "punk" teenager, editing my managers' emails, memos, and letters!

Looking back on it, I still can't believe it.

Nevertheless, this pattern continued until I was "picked off" by Sonlight Curriculum, a homeschoolinlg company who was looking for a copywriter to take over some writing responsibilities from the owner.

For me, it was a "no-brainer." I jumped at the chance to write for a living.

At that point, I began a grueling apprenticeship with the company's owner. Technically, I could write. But my direct response writing skills stunk!

And the guy who hired me was not afraid to say so. I can't tell you how many times my copy got ripped to shreds under the intense scrutiny of my boss. Many evenings I would drive home licking the wounds of his criticism.

Ultimately, it was a good thing. It caused me to really dig down deep to master copywriting. And that's what I did.
